Glasgow Bike Station, Glasgow
Established in 2010, Glasgow Bike Station (GBS) is a volunteer run charity that encourages and promotes good mental and physical health through cycling as a means of transport; it aims to advance the education of the public in the safe use of bicycles and their repair.
The organisation teaches cycle training, bike maintenance and cycle safety to members of the community. GBS refurbishes donated bicycles and sells them on at an affordable price, covered by a 3 month warranty. GBS also sells second hand parts and accessories. Additional services include FYOB (Fix Your Own Bike) workshops where the public can use the workshop and tools, and seek advice from accredited mechanics, to fix their bikes for only £4 an hour. Dr Bike provides mobile mechanic services to maintain bikes at specific workplaces or community events.
GBS has won an award for Outstanding Achievement by Cycling Scotland, Best Sustainable Transport Project and Outstanding Overall Project in Glasgow, and First National Project at the Scottish Green List.
Velocity Café and Bicycle Workshop, Inverness
Velocity is a cafe and bicycle workshop based in Inverness. They have one aim, and that’s to help people get on their bicycles and promote a healthy, happy lifestyle. Velocity is a Social Enteprise. “For the love of bikes, cakes and people!”, so says their mission statement!
Velocity offers a Fix Your Own Bicycle Workshop, open to all members, with access to the tools, the space and the experience of at least one bicycle mechanic to allow members of the community to fix their bikes, potter, learn and explore new skills.
Go ByCycle is an outreach project, funded by the Scottish Governments Climate Challenge Fund, working with schools and workplaces across Inverness to help get more people riding their bikes to school and work. Velocity’s team of dedicated Go ByCyclists work with groups to understand the barriers to people feeling confident and able to get on their bikes. Velocity will provide maintenance classes, safer routes workshops and confidence-building rides to increase peoples knowledge and assurance that riding a bike can be easy, fun and increase mental and physical health.
